A Summer of Firsts: Looking Back at Milestones and Successes of 2017

Key Takeaways

  • Launch of our most ambitious project yet, VoyagerODN, which offers a free global catalog of geospatial content.
  • Successful first annual user group meeting, Voyager Experience, was held in San Diego and brought together customers from a variety of industries.
  • This year marked a busy year for our flagship software with the release of three new versions, all featuring improvements and updates.

With autumn in full swing, we’re taking a look back at some of the incredible moments we’ve had this year at Voyager Search. Worldwide, 2017 has certainly been interesting, full of incredible historical events, spectacular astronomical discoveries, and once-in-a-lifetime occurrences, as well as some extraordinary and catastrophic natural events. From NASA’s discovery of a solar system with 7 Earth-like planets orbiting a single star, to the total solar eclipse that many had the opportunity to witness for the first time, to the numerous natural disasters, including Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, and Maria. This year’s news has been full of exciting, and at times challenging, events. Here at Voyager Search, we had some pretty great happenings as well.

Our Most Ambitious Project Yet: VoyagerODN

In June of this year, we introduced VoyagerODN, our open data network. Leveraging the award-winning Voyager technology, we’ve created a single point of search across publicly available geospatial data. VoyagerODN is the culmination of years of planning and development, and we’re incredibly excited to offer this free service to the public. It has also been included in Voyager Search’s newest iterations, making millions of items easily accessible through a licensed instance.

Finding the right publicly available geospatial data can often be a time-consuming, stressful, and  frustrating process. Even moreso when lives are at stake. In response to the devastation caused by recent hurricanes, we allocated resources to include local, state, and national to VoyagerODN to assist in the disaster response.

Be a Part of the VoyagerODN Community

VoyagerODN is free for everyone. Access any of the data that we’ve indexed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by visiting odn.voyagersearch.com. VoyagerODN was developed to be an ever-evolving, interactive community search portal, so we welcome any feedback, questions, or suggestions you may have. If  there is content that you feel would benefit others, or that you’d like to see added to the index, please let us know by visiting our Contribute to VoyagerODN page or by emailing us directly.

Voyager Experience

We held our inaugural user group meeting, Voyager Experience, in San Diego prior to the Esri User Conference in July. It was an afternoon filled with insight and lessons learned, along with case studies from current Voyager customers and exclusive sneak peeks into what’s coming up next at Voyager Search. Attendees had the opportunity to share their Voyager Search stories, exchange ideas and concepts, and discuss the diverse ways their organizations have been able to utilize Voyager software. The event was such a success that we’ve decided to carry that momentum into future webinars, local Voyager Experience meetups, training sessions, and more.

Three Versions of Voyager Software

For our flagship Voyager software, 2017 has been a busy year. In June, July, and September we released Voyager versions 1.9.9, 1.9.10, and 1.9.11. With 1.9.9, Voyager software:

  • Became smarter through the inclusion of Natural Language Processing (NLP);
  • Is now fully cloud enabled;
  • Features Snapshots for easy migration and recovery; and
  • Provides users and administrators the ability to set up the tools they need where they need them, in addition to 100 other small improvements made.

We also gave customers the option to federate to VoyagerODN from within their own licensed product.

Voyager versions 1.9.10 and 1.9.11 saw some great improvements as well. With Voyager 1.9.10, the software now has the ability to run on Linux and, with the release of Voyager 1.9.11, it gained Query Expansion, a quick way for users to broaden their search experience and to explore their organization’s data in new ways.

Looking Forward

It certainly has been a great year for us here at Voyager Search. Our team is continuing their hard work and we’re looking forward to releasing some truly remarkable advancements in Voyager software in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the upcoming release of Voyager 1.9.12!

Additionally, we’ve been working with a number of customers to share more of the remarkable projects that we’ve had the privilege to be a part of.

We’ll also be heading to the Esri Canada User Conference in Ottawa, the Esri European Petroleum GIS Conference, and KMWorld 2017. Be sure to keep a look out for the Voyager booth at each of these. Our staff will also be traveling the country to attend a number of other conferences. Check out our Events page to learn more.

The successes we’ve had this year has laid the foundation for 2018, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
